The growing number of medical implants in the last few decades—made from inert materials that do not promote biologic integration or functional tissue regeneration—has ameliorated the consequences of tissue disease and injury for countless patients. To address this concern, biomechanical tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are emerging as promising disciplines to create or induce healthy tissue growth.
The field of biomechanical engineering has expanded remarkably in the past ten years. This growth is supported by advances in biological science, which have created new opportunities for development of tools for diagnosis and therapy for human disease. The discipline focuses both on development of new biomaterials, analytical methodologies and on the application of concepts drawn from engineering, computing, mathematics, chemical and physical sciences to advance biomedical knowledge while improving the effectiveness and delivery of clinical medicine.
Biomechanics now also encompasses a range of fields of specialization including bioinstrumentation, bioimaging, biomaterials, and biomolecular engineering. Two independent research groups from the School of Medicine, Tongji University, respectively, constructed two separate three-dimensional FE models of lumbar spine last year and studied the biomechanical effect of different grades of facetectomy. Prevention and protection of sports injury is another focus are of biomechanics. There has been a significant progress to curtail the effects of hamstring strain during sprint running.
